Preservation status,
printing processes
& main formats

A vintage or even a recent poster can be appreciated according to several criteria as of course antiquity and rarity, the theme and also by its signature, its preservation status, its format. All these informations make the value we can attach to it.

www.theposterslover.com presents a main part of the collection is in excellent preservation status even for vintages.

An important part of the posters (contemporaneous) is printed in Offset the most common process today. Another important part is printed in silk-screen lithography, digital.

L'état de conservation

Every original poster is handled as little as possible and with care. Particularly for fragile or heavily inked posters I use cotton gloves to avoid any risk of smudges or fingerprints.

Some collectors resort to canvas-coating which is an ideal process for paper preservation. It's very useful for damaged poster restoration and can be done on request (this technique has a cost and depends on the format).

When the poster is in very fine condition - as in my collection - it's not necessary and better not to intervene and keep the original condition.

Depending on the format, they are stored rolled, in protective packaging and/or tubes to isolate the rolls and protect them from each other.

A+ or very fine condition

(Brand new for the most recent posters). The poster's condition is above average even if it has some using smudges. it presents no major defects and no shortages. Minor defects uniquely are agreed as pinholes or light fading on the oldest pieces.

B or good condition

The picture is clean but with a little bit more defected than the previous condition. Sometimes there are traces of damp or paper yellowing. These defects are often corrected at the restoration and washing ans canvas-coating.

A- or fine

Near of A+ or very fine but with some defects like light tears or more pronounced folds.

C or fair

The poster's condition is under the average with various damages ( shortages, fading, tape, damaged edges) but is still very presentable.

METHODS OF PRINTING
Offset, lithography & Numeric printing
Offset & lithography

Offset & lithography

Offset is an improvement print process of lithography. A flexible plate (aluminium or plastic sheet) suitable to a cylinder takes place of lithographic stone. The print process is based on the lithographic process which involves through repulsion fatty ink, water and selective coatings.

Silkscreen

Silkscreen

It's a print process by stencil. This technical way of printing allows to represent highly detailed, bright and colorful independent graphics. This is possible because of the screen through what the ink is pressed by the doctor blade during the print process. This process is rather expensive because of the implementation complexity. But you can obtain print run in short series.

And digital?

And digital?

The poster market of street furniture and advertising is evolving at top speed. With new environmental rules and digital poster's appearance (a few last years ago), the making of advertising poster in large series has gradually been replaced by digital print of quality in short series. All these settings foreshadow future scarcity of still valuable paper posters nowadays.
